I am heartened to report that yesterday morning I attended a “we are grateful for America” assembly at my kids’ elementary school. Mind you that this is a public elementary school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The school grounds were replete with American flags; an ROTC color guard from a local high school was present; the students recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Gettysburg Address; they sang songs with titles such as “Thankful for the USA” and “Oh, I Love America.” In an age in which school administrators around the country regularly stipulate that the American flag is offensive, the administrators at my kids’ school deserve high praise indeed.
But I can’t help but wonder: if you were to ask these administrators, who very admirably chose to have this “God Bless America” assembly, would you vote for a candidate, for any office, who for 20 years attended a church — that’s over one thousand Sundays — whose pastor regularly preached “God Damn America?” It seems likely that nearly all of them would answer no. But it is a safe bet that nearly all of them voted for just such a candidate for president.
